World Wetlands Day
Bohol2026-02-05Bohol Island Geopark marked World Wetlands Day with a mangrove planting in Puerto San Pedro, Bien Unido, led by the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO). This action reaffirms our commitment to safeguarding wetlands as natural defenses supporting climate action, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.
Under the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” the event highlighted wetlands' role in sustaining biodiversity, fisherfolk livelihoods, and Boholano cultural practices. Mangroves provide breeding grounds for marine life and protect coastlines from storm surges. Planting 250 Bungalon mangrove seedlings with Coast Guard Bohol, Bien Unido LGU, and BUMEA advances SDGs 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), 15 (Life on Land), and 11 (Sustainable Communities). Through collective stewardship, we protect our wetlands as living heritage for generations.

Rio Coco Interpretation Improvement - Tres Señoritas Geosite
geobusRio Coco2025-06-30The new vision for the information panels in Rio Coco includes the principles of geoeducation, geoconservation, community involvement, indigenous knowledge and traditions and networking. One of the most significant geosites in the Rio Coco UGGp, is the “Tres Señoritas” geosite, located at the north in the Totogalpa municipality, where there are indigenous communities and a strong community involvement with the Geopark. The "Two-Eyed Seeing" (or Etuaptmumk in the Mi'kmaw language) concept is an Indigenous guiding principle that advocates for learning to see the world by drawing on the strengths of both Indigenous and Western knowledge systems. The core idea is to use these two perspectives together, for the benefit of all people and the world, without one dominating the other. After several exchanges between collaborators, local stakeholders and the contractor the new concept of the panel has been implemented.

Geoeducation in Motion: Bohol Geoschools champion Geopark and 4GEON Vision
2025-04-29With the mission to make geoscience not just understood but also loved, teachers from across Bohol immersed themselves in a two-day journey of learning, storytelling, and reflection during the Geopark Orientation and Geotour for Geopark School and 4GEON Club Advisers, held on July 2–3, 2025 at the National Museum of the Philippines – Bohol and selected geosites across the island.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Education - Bohol Division and the Provincial Government of Bohol, marked another milestone in strengthening the geoeducation pillar of the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark—the first and only of its kind in the Philippines.
At its core, the activity aimed to build the capacity of selected educators from geoschools, with the hope of inspiring them to initiate innovative school-based programs that contribute meaningfully to the geopark's development and sustainability. It also highlighted the geopark's participation in the UNESCO IGCP 726: 4GEON (Four Continents Connected Through Playful Geo-education) Project, which champions fun and inclusive geoscience learning through youth engagement. Key elements of 4GEON—geovehicles, geoportals, geocompetitions, and geocourses—were gradually brought to life during the event.
Bridging Knowledge and Purpose
The activity opened with an orientation session attended by principals and club advisers from identified geoschools.
Participants were given an overview of the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark—its significance to Boholanos, its contributions to conservation, education, and sustainable tourism, and the power of local-global partnerships in advancing its mission.
This was followed by an engaging presentation on the 4GEON Project, including firsthand insights from last year's physical project meeting at Ngorongoro UNESCO Global Geopark in Tanzania. Teachers expressed renewed motivation after hearing stories of global collaboration, playful geoeducation, and youth-driven initiatives.
Unique Stories from Science to Myth
On the field, teachers were brought face-to-face with some of the most iconic and meaningful geosites in Bohol.
Day one took them to the Chocolate Hills Natural Monument, where the resident geologist simplified the scientific formation of the hills, while the geopark tour guide brought the landscape to life through local myths and legends.
The eastern leg of the tour on day two featured Lamanok Point in Anda, Can-umantad Falls in Candijay, and the Alicia Schist Outcrop. At Lamanok Point, participants crossed shallow waters via small boats steered by the Badiang Fisherman Association (BAFIAS)—a local people's organization managing the site's ecotourism efforts. Here, teachers explored caves and rock shelters bearing prehistoric ecofacts—boat coffins, human bones, broken jars—and the haunting hematite cave paintings, underscoring the cultural depth of the geopark.
At Can-umantad Falls, they were warmly welcomed by the barangay LGU and community guides who shared facts that bridged science with leisure. Finally, the group stood before the Alicia Schist, Bohol's oldest rock formation, formed more than 100 million years ago beneath the sea. While the outcrop may not boast immediate visual appeal, it underpins the dramatic ridges of the Alicia Panoramic Park, reminding participants that beauty in geology lies as much in its stories as in its forms.
Reflections and Checks
The journey culminated at Cayacay High School in Alicia, one of the geopark schools. There, teachers shared reflections marked by gratitude, fulfillment, and excitement for upcoming geochallenges in their respective schools.
More than just an academic exercise, this activity served as a living experience of what it means to teach geoeducation the UNESCO Global Geopark way: grounded in place, informed by science, empowered by culture, and driven by community.
From geocoasters and BAFIAS' boats (check for geovehicles), to the in-field orientation (check for geocourse), and the soon-to-be-launched school competitions (check for geocompetitions), the Geopark Orientation and Geotour ensured that 4GEON is more than a concept—it's a growing movement in Bohol.
A Collaborative Success
This effort was made possible through the continued support of Governor Erico Aristotle C. Aumentado, Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Fay Suarez, Education Program Supervisor for Social Sciences Dr. Jupiter Maboloc, and the municipal and barangay LGUs of Carmen, Alicia, Anda, Candijay, and Cadapdapan. Special thanks are also extended to the NMP Bohol, BAFIAS, the community guides of Can-umantad Falls, and all educators who continue to lead the way in making geoeducation fun, relevant, and transformative.

geobusBohol2025-04-28The event brought together focal persons from key partner offices of the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark and a representative of the Eskaya Indigenous Cultural Community, with the support of barangay and municipal local government units. The Geotour offered a day of discovery, dialogue, and deeper commitment to geoconservation and geoeducation. Participants journeyed through several of Bohol’s geological and cultural sites: National Museum of the Philippines – Bohol in Tagbilaran City – where heritage and history are vividly portrayed through its engaging exhibits. Sandugo Blood Compact Site in Hinawanan, Loay – a powerful symbol of unity and peace in Filipino history. Museo ng Pamana at Kasaysayang Boholano in Loay – an immersive experience into Boholano culture and identity. Canawa Cold Spring in Candijay and Alicia Panoramic Park – where pristine waters and sweeping vistas offer serene reflections on nature’s beauty. Alicia Schist – the oldest exposed rock formation in Bohol, telling the story of the island’s ancient geologic past.
